The Via Ferrata – meaning “iron way” in Italian – is one of the biggest names in Telluride mountaineering, and is something that even those with little-to-no experience rock climbing are capable of enjoying. The Via Ferrata is a series of narrow hiking paths and rugged iron ladder stairs bolted into the cliff face north of Downtown Telluride, where climbers hook themselves into a metal cable that runs along the face of the rock, enjoying drastic drops and spectacular views. The style of climbing was developed in the Dolomites during World War One to aid soldiers in quickly and efficiently scaling dramatic mountain faces (with little to no experience), and routes are found all over the alpine regions of central Europe.
